Mobile Auto Repair.
How does that work? - By John Wessels
Many ask why I changed to a Mobile repair
service from a fixed base of operations. The most simple is to adapt
to how much the auto repair business has changed.
Over the past ten years and especially the last five the
amount of service and repairs needed by today’s cars has been
drastically reduced. Maintenance intervals are two to three times
longer than they used to be. Current cars are also built much
better. Major repairs with engines when properly maintained are rare
now. Cars simply breakdown much less often now. Since major work is
rarely needed it has become inefficient to be a full blown hospital
of auto repair when all that is needed for 99.9% of the time is an
out patient clinic. Most of the work now is diagnostics and regular
service.
So with less work coming into repair
shops along with rapidly rising cost of doing business many shops
have disappeared. The complex technology that has to be kept up was
enough on it’s own to make it difficult to be profitable. Add to
that the astronomical rise in real estate values and greedy
landlord’s rents have become unsustainable for small repair shops.
The complexity and the hard work required of an employee for
him to be profitable have made eligible candidates extremely rare.
So even if you could get enough work in the shop to cover the
escalating costs you can’t find a good technician to complete the
work. There are no minimum standards or licensing requirements for
an auto technician in the state of California. Anyone can be hired
to do the work. Unfortunately many desperate repair shops do this at
the expense of competent, quality work.
As with all electronics auto test equipment has
become much smaller and much more powerful. What used to be the size
of two refrigerators now can be held in one hand. It is also
portable and can be used while the car is driven. Powerful features
can also record electronic wave forms during a test drive that can
be analyzed later. For the difficult intermittent problems this
technology has been a big help. Other technologies have also been
developed that have made a very capable Mobile auto repair possible
with out sacrifice. The German made Nusbaum lift that is installed
in the trailer will lift a car over six feet in the air with all
mechanicals still exposed for repairs. I use state of the art air
tools that have quiet operation technology.
I have wireless internet so that I can order parts, find
repair information and process credit cards easier than ever.
I have designed my service trailer and had it custom built to
my specifications to make full use of all this new technology. It is
the only one in the world like it.
Being Mobile also enables me to acquire more
new customers so I can stay more consistent with my work flow.
Studies have shown that most people do not like to drive more than
five miles for auto repairs. I can now go to smaller commuter towns
that have no one available to service their German car. For many of
these towns people have to drive 45 to 90 minutes to find competent
repair service. Of course scheduling of work so that I spend time in
certain areas at a time will be necessary to keep my travel time as
little as possible.
It is this new business model that I have created
that I hope will allow me to offer excellent service that is more
convenient to my customers.
